Room in Rome: A Night That Changed Everything
In 2010, Spanish director Julio Medem released Room in Rome, a film examining the complexity of intimacy between two women in a single night over a hotel room. Although the simplicity of the film’s narrative prompted a focus on the identity of the characters, the complexity of the themes surrounding identity, intimacy, and the human condition, leaves one spellbound. Most importantly, the characters and lead performers were Alba, Anaya, and Natasha Yarovenko, and Natasha.
Alba: The Spanish Woman Seeking Connection
Alba, a 30-year-old Spanish tourist, arrives in Rome on vacation, hoping to get a break from her everyday life and to gain some emotional connection, even if fleeting, before she returns to her life. She meets Natasha, a younger Russian woman, and the two share a night that becomes transformative for both. Natasha’s initial reluctance toward Alba was not a barrier, as Alba’s open, expressive, and emotionally available character was enough for her to be drawn in.
Elena Anaya’s interpretation of Alba was vividly appreciated. Anaya has starred in The Skin I Live In, and has her own admiration for the character and articulated her impression with the character. This character does not feel daily. In her role prep with Medem, Anaya spent the most time and incorporated time into her character emotionally and thoroughly to make her character feel anchor with Alba’s deeply personal yet universal journey.
Natasha: The Russian Woman Guarding Her Heart
For Natasha, she spends the beginning of the night with her emotional wall. She neither gives the impression of requesting of emotionally. Nonetheless, whilst the night prolongs and she interacts with Alba emotionally, she releases her emotional wall, and for the first time displays her emotional and trauma. This journey in acceptance and of love, challenges all preconceived.
Natasha Yarovenko’s portrayal of Natasha was seamless and emotionally powerful. Back then, Yarovenko was new to international audiences, and this brought a rawness to the role that strongly resonated to many. As part of her role preparation, she recognized the intricacies of the character Natasha’s cultural and socio background, the intricacies of the role that shaped her character and constructed the on screen chemistry needed with Anaya for the respective scenes they performed together.
Creating the Backstory for the Scenes
Medem framed the story to observe how the closed set of the hotel room could imply and create a feeling of emotional disconnection and distance for the characters. The isolated nature of the set also provided an opportunity to focus on the nuances of the actors performances.
Anaya and Yarovenko noted that the secluded scenes were difficult to create yet still the emotional story remained rewarding and winning. The confined quaters created a need to build constructs of trust and rapport that bly likely was channeled to their on screen connection. Anaya described that the bond they built was central to and a defining component for the success of the film.
Audience Reception: A Divisive Yet Impactful Film
Room in Rome elicited mixed responses when it was first released. Some viewers commended the film for its fearless representation of same-sex relationships, while others were indifferent to, or even made negative comments about, the frontal nudity in the film.
There were, however, viewers who were appreciative enough of the film’s artistry, the performances of Anaya and Yarovenko, and the film’s powerful message about love and identity, to regard it as an accomplished piece.
Legacy: A Film That Pushed Boundaries
Room in Rome continues to be an important film in LGBTQ+ cinema. Its treatment of the story of an intense, albeit brief, connection between two women was and remains bold and challenges the normative framework of love and identity. Elena Anaya and Natasha Yarovenko’s performances and the authenticity they brought to the characters are highly acclaimed to this day.
In the years since its release, the film has been revisited by both audiences and critics, frequently acknowledged as a courageous and essential contribution to the genre. It remains a powerful example of the ability of film to examine intricate feelings and connections and to challenge boundaries and generate dialogue that remains relevant to the present day.
