When School Walls Hold More Than Lessons
Teachers Pet was more than just another drama about life in the classroom. It started from the first read-through. The project seemed like it was going to be a balancing act of sorts, humor, teenage frustration and the darker aspects of attend school. The film, in it’s story, follows Claire Reynolds. In the film, Claire, an insistent senior willing to do anything for attention, has a caring yet troubled teacher to keep her in check. While Claire deals with a multitude of activities of her school life, so does the audience, but with more than just a teenager. There is anxiety, ambition, and the human toll of expectations.
The entire film’s impact did not come solely from the character’s struggles. While a big part, it was also how the entire cast and crew faced issues of their own that reflected the film’s story.
Claire Reynolds: The Costs of Flawless Performance
The character played by the leading actress, Emma Hartley, engrossed herself into the imaginary world of Claire. Hartley spent almost every day of the week in the Hartley persona. Emma is Claire’s split personality — full of focus, strained, and perpetually oscillating between depression and hysteria. The actress is still finding time to do college applications, juggling the responsibilities of the family, and copes with never-ending traveling schedules for the shoot. The crew remembers certain days during shooting when Emma would collapse in the trailer in character and pop back out to record another scene. She didn’t care if she caught a cold or was suffering from acute lethargy. Her work would not be compromised. She slipped into character effortlessly and did the job that was given to her.
The work she did for the role was tremendous. Spending time with her in class was a luxury that the students in the school that she attended did not expect. She simply had to talk to the kids, counselors, and hang out in class. The school didn’t have cameras to record Hartley, thus the kids did not expect anyone to notice her during class. As the kids around her bombarded with some thoughtful questions then the attention of everyone around her would shift. The cold steely authenticity of Sundance was something she wished to exemplify with Hartley. Hartley was not the only one who would pay the price for becoming Claire and losing her Hartley identity. Working during the day and beyond the school’s gates was not an easy job, every week around the second week of shooting to the last week, Hartley and Claire would start shooting then. The only time that she didn’t complain, instead aligned her thoughts and was focused was when her panic attacks would pop up. They did pay attention to the actors, and they noticed that something was wrong in a shooting during the week.
Mr. Daniels: The Balancing of Power and Weakness
As Mr. Daniels, Mark Landon was both a seasoned actor and a person who encountered difficulties of his own. During the time of shooting, Landon was recovering from a shoulder injury as well as suffering from chronic back pain, which exacerbated the bulldozer style of corridor shooting that involved a dozen takes. There were many nights when he participated in emotionally straining confrontations while juggling multiple doses of pain medication.

Such criticism almost endangered the funding during the post-production phase and the team was forced to defend the narrative as a reflection, not an exaggeration, of life in a school in modern times.
Health issues did not only belong to Landon and Hartley. A supporting actor developed seasonal bronchitis and during the outdoor shoots, this led to delays and the rescheduling of scenes. The crew struggled to able to find ways to work around the illness, even and at times filming or collapsing the filming schedule at the very last moment. The confined suffering was a bonding experience for the cast, who later referred to it as ‘devastating but bonding’ due to the sense of fellowship.

Claire’s’s capturing anxiety-driven perfectionism, Daniels’ quiet anger, and the school corridor’s pervasive tension all stemmed from the very pains that the cast and crew faced.
What the theater-goers first perceived, anxiety and tension, failure and triumph, were all related to the unobserved tenacity wrapped around the scaffolding of the set, just like the students attempting to face the cruel realities of growing up that lay in front of them, unashamed. Teachers Pet teaches us that, rather less for the audience of the film, it was the cast and crew that were made to believe the moment, the story they thought was projected was what was captured on screen. It has become more apparent that the story behind the story is just as important as the one that is put forward.
