When the Laughs Met the Ghosts: The Twisted Journey of Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2
In Bollywood, sequels often walk on thin ice, especially when the first film is a classic. So when Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 was announced, fans were both excited and scared. Was anyone really able to recapture the chilling charm and the brilliant comic timing of the 2007 cult classic starring Akshay Kumar and Vidya Balan? Would it just be another recycled horror-comedy or is it something that could actually stand on its own? The sentiment was laced with skepticism, memes, and a sense of muted excitement.
But by the time the film was released in May 2022, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 had astonished everyone, critics, audience and even its cast. The movie was not trying to outdo the original, it simply marched to the rhythm of its own to the blend of terror and mirth, sentiment and madness, and of course, the cheeky charm of Kartik Aaryan and the calm poise of Kiara Advani.
The Ghost Returns, but Not the Same
The tale unfolds in a new world, a world that is unlike the world of the first film but still echoes its haunted core. Reet (Kiara Advani) is a free-spirited young woman from Rajasthan and meets Ruhaan (Kartik Aaryan), a happy-go-lucky drifter who rapidly earns the moniker “Rooh Baba” after pretending to communicate with spirits.
The two find themselves in strange circumstances when they uncover some hidden truths in the Bhawanigarh haveli – the same place haunted by the spirit of Manjulika, a ghost who haunted the generations in a similar fashion to a horror tale. This time, however, Manjulika’s presence is different – darker yet somehow familiar.
As the film progresses, the questions keep piling on. Is the ghost an illusion? Is Ruhaan a gifted person, or is he just a smooth talking fraud? The second half is a chaotic carnival, blending jump scares with comical absurdity, and an emotional twist focusing on Reet and her family’s past, interweaving the supernatural.
The Bhool Bhulaiyaa Franchise and Karthik Aryan’s Transformation
The moment Karthik Aryan was appointed the leading role, he was bound to with Karan Johar’s Dostana 2 and there were rumors in the Bollywood circles about his professionality. Many viewed Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 as a moment in his career declaring whether it would be a break or make moment.Kartik’s Rod Baba became the spirit of the film. He played the lead character, a street-smart, and witty hero, capturing the audience’s attention with a mischievousness that elicited laughter and a sincerity that won neighborhood support. He didn’t depend on Akshay’s legacy and crafted his own. The “Ami je tomaar” sequence, where he performs an exorcism while dancing, was a meaningful reminder of why the audience loved him. He was fun, fearless, and committed.
Kartik was reported to film some of the most challenging sequences while managing a leg injury. He was described rehearsing dance steps even while limping, he was determined to give energy to every beat. His drive mirrored Ruhaan’s own hunger for validation, a coincidence that made his performance truly authentic.
Kiara Advani: Between Faith and Fear
Kiara Advani’s Reet was not just a damsel in distress. She played dual shades of innocence and mystery that captured the attention of the audience even in the comedic chaos. For Kiara, who was fresh off Shershaah and rapidly rising in Bollywood, the role in Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 was a genre detour—a unique opportunity to blend with the collapsible suspense of the film.

It is worth noting that Tabu was not the first choice for this role. The producers contemplated casting another senior actress, but later understood that the complexity that came with a dual role required a unique combination of elegance and ferocity, a combination that only Tabu could provide. Her unforgettable performance made Manjulika not a mere ghost, but a troubling memory.
When Laughter and Fear Shared a Frame
Director, Anees Bazmee, was tightrope walking with Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2. He was managing the fear with comedy, and the spirituality with slapstick. He understood that the audience was not going to look for a psychological thriller, but rather a mindless entertainment that was perfect for a Friday night.
The contrast in the cinematography was stark – the Rajasthani attires and the the dull, candle-lit corridors were disturbing. Pritam updated the haunting version of “Ami je tomaar” song for the movie. Sandeep Shirodkar’s background score hovered between playful and petrifying, creating a constant state of unease for the audience.
There were, of course, imperfections in the film – some jokes were too long, some of the scares were predictable – but the the energy and pacing of the film was captivating. Above all, it was a reminder that Bollywood is still able to produce masala films with heart and style.
What the Hype Gave Birth To
Prior to its unveiling, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 seemed to embody an ‘exceedingly promising preview’ amid overwhelming pressure. Though critics were questioning the capability of Kartik Aaryan as the lead, fans of the movie were fiercely defending the original, hence placing additional pressure on him, while Bollywood was still struggling to make a recovery in the post-pandemic landscape. As there were a number of films that had performed poorly at the box office, this movie seemed to be a risky bet.
What was the outcome? This movie turned out to be one of the biggest blockbusters in 2022. With a combination of nostalgia and a different energy the audience was smiling, laughing, and cheering. Kartik Aryan made a statement in the industry as, “He’s not just an upcoming star, as Bollywood’s new crowd-puller.”.
The Whispers Behind the Walls
However, mild tension does not make a movie lose its charm. With regard to the tone of the film, there was tension in the creative style between the director and the producers, as it incorporated elements of darker humor. Kartik’s improvisations clashed with Bazmee’s structured screenwriting, as they had working dynamics of a movie and theater director. To be fair, both of them were good at their game. Creative unsatisfaction was a game of imbalance. A darker tragic ending was replaced with a lighter, satisfactory version.
Between the multitude of shoots, reschedules, and reworks in the deserts of Rajasthan, the spirit of Bhool Bhulaiyaa was rekindled. It was no longer just a film about apparitions; it was a film about new beginnings– new beginnings for the characters and for the actors who portrayed them.
The storyline, which began as a haunting, turned out to be a homecoming instead. This is what Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 signified. It served as a reminder that the combination of laughter and terror, when intertwined with emotions, can still create a sensational experience.
