Empire of Lust (Korean title: 간신) tells the story of political intrigues that revolve a complex relationship of desire and love within the scope of the Joseon period. This historical drama is directed by Lee Joon-ik and is centered around stories of ambition, betrayal, and desire within the framework of power struggles within the imperial crown.
We follow Lee Soo-hyuk who plays Gwanghae, a calculating and charismatic crown prince, and Jung-in, played by Kim Min-jung, who is a political noblewoman in love entangled in a high-risk game of courtly intrigue. As complex layers of romance, passion, and deadly vengeance spiral in the court, the players in the game of intrigues are pushed to the limits and called to pass unthinkable moral tests to survive.
Gwanghae: A Prince Torn Between Duty and Desire
As a prince, Gwanghae has to balance rage and high ambition, with extreme vulnerability to love and betrayal. This role is a true highlight of Lee Soo-hyuk. This is because Gwanghae is an ambitious prince, yet incredibly intelligent, and, in love, betrayal is the most extreme vulnerability, a most complex challenge. A significant amount of time studying research literature helped understand the complex legacy and reign of Gwanghae, and postcards and pictures were instrumental in grasping the psychological and political narratives of Joseon royal children and Gwanghae’s contemporaries.
His performance reflects the internal conflict of a man torn between patriotism and self-interest. Gwanghae’s interactions—with particular reference to his bond with Jung-in—also demonstrate his multidimensionality as a character. He is a can empathetic prince and a human calculating prince. He is emotionally exposed and ruthlessly ambitious. He is morally complex and intensely captivating as a character due to the shift of his character from obsessive passion to restrained ambition.
Jung-in: The Power of Subtlety
Jung-in’s character, played by Kim Min-jung, goes beyond being a love interest. She is a court intriguer strategically navigating a dangerous court. She uses political games to balance political vulnerability and risky intellectual interactions. Kim prepared for the role by studying the 16th century noblewoman’s mannerisms and etiquette, which included social constraints and interactions.
Her character development is captivating. Initially, Jung-in is submissive and loyal, but she eventually empowers herself, demonstrating that influence can be exercised in quiet and understated ways. The relationship Gwanghae and Jung-in share is pivotal in driving the film’s suspense and tension.
