A Global Game of Cat and Mouse
The narrative centers on Sierra Six portrayed by Ryan Gosling, an adept CIA agent who happens to come across concerning information regarding his superiors and, in consequence, becomes a target by his own agency. This leads Six, now a fugitive, to cross paths on an exotic ‘cat and mouse’ chase with the merciless killer Lloyd Hansen (Chris Evans) who is hired to track him down. Six is also trying to bring the truth to light with the help of his fellow agent Dani Miranda (Ana de Armas). This leads to a chase across the globe, with close and explosive confrontations within the script and the cinematography. There is an extraordinary flow that is achieved within the narrative structure of the film, leading to the ‘action’ and explosive ‘chase’ narrative elements.
Characters in Conflict
Ryan Gosling as Sierra Six: Gosling is the ultimate focus in the film, and as such is the ‘station’ around which the other characters revolve. This is in a fairly unique sense, as he is the emotional core that the audience connects to, which is a contrast to the ‘action’ of the film, while also performing the ‘action’ in every sequence.
Chris Evans as Lloyd Hansen: Evans is the most ‘charming’ and as such the most ‘dangerous’ of the characters. Even in the light of his previous roles, which are heroic, he is able to present Hansen as a ‘charming’ and ‘dangerous’ soul. This is a unique contrast to most ‘antagonists’, and as such drives most of the scenes.
Ana de Armas as Dani Miranda: De Armas as Miranda is the skilled agent who performs her part with intensity, ease, and confidence. The audience appreciation is as a result of the emotional connection that is displayed between her and Gosling which drives the storyline.
Regé-Jean Page as Denny Carmichael: Page plays the CIA superior who brings a sense of interest and tension and symbolizes the inter-agency bureaucratic obstacles.
Billy Bob Thornton as Fitzroy: Thornton represents a truly mentor-like figure to Six and provides a sense of balance to the movie.
Dhanush, Jessica Henwick, and Alfre Woodard as support cast members further diversify the ensemble.
Artistic Quality
The high production values of the movie are fully reflected in the quality of the visuals. As a core part of the team, the Movie’s Cinematographer, Stephen F. Windon, professionally blends innovative camera techniques to capture personal character interactions alongside the large scale action scenes. The varying colour palettes and the character lighting are a brilliant presentation of the film’s intended emotional emphasis, notably the contrast of the cold blues of the city and the warm tones of the personal scenes.
The Russo brothers maintain a high standard of direction and narrative while constructing the action scenes. Rather than extravagance for its own sake, each chase and fight scene is constructed to augment the action by developing character relations and furthering the storyline.
The score of the Movie, created by Henry Jackman, provides accompaniment to the action of the scenes and keeps up the rhythm which supports the strengthening narrative during high tension moments.
Behind the Lens
The film’s scope was international as shooting took place in different locations around the globe, including Los Angeles, Paris, and Prague. The coordination of elaborate action sequences was especially difficult in different locations as the production team had to manage several different and complex moving parts. It was a nice touch to have the Russo brothers consult former CIA agents about trade craft and how the different espionage agency’s operational work was performed, as it made the film a bit more realistic and interesting.
Production delays out of Prague made the Russo brothers the subject of controversy due to their perceived ‘banning’ by authorities. The problems in Logistics were clearly insurmountable, as the Prague locations were abandoned in favor of different, more creatively achievable, locations around the world and different filming techniques.
On the other hand, the inhouse production team of the film made great use of the latest technology in the industry to design the visual and physical action sequences. The team perfected the design of the sequences to a degree that they not only had to make them believable, but they had to make them exciting and exhilarating as well.
